Installing OpenVPN

The following directions will guide you through the set up of OpenVPN on your Windows device and assumes you have set up a new connector in Synergy and started the OpenVPN download. For further guidance on setting up a new connector, view the coordinating article in the Set up and Connect Topic.


1. Click the OpenVPN download at the bottom left of the screen to run the executable.

2. If a Windows Defender SmartScreen window appears, click the “More info” link, and then click the [Run anyway] button on the proceeding Windows Defender SmartScreen window.

3. The Resolute OpenVPN Installer Setup dialog box appears. Click the [Next] button.

4. To continue installing Resolute OpenVPN you must accept the terms of the License Agreement. If you accept, click the “I accept the terms of the License Agreement” radio button, and then click the [Install] button. If you do not accept, click the [Cancel] button to close the installer.

5. A dialog box appears informing you that both the Windows firewall and the owner’s network firewall are configured to allow outbound Internet access through “UDP Port 1194.” Click the [OK] button.

The firewall requires the host to create an outbound UDP connection to port 1194 at each of the following IP addresses. These IP addresses are static and may be used in firewall allow lists.

  • 52.200.43.149 
  • 52.204.96.170
  • 52.44.189.40
  • 52.54.72.176

6. The OpenVPN Setup dialog box appears. Click the [Next] button.

7. To continue installing OpenVPN you must accept the terms of the License Agreement. If you accept, click [I Agree]. If you do not accept, click the [Cancel] button to close the installer.

8. The OpenVPN Choose Components dialog box appears. Click the [Next] button.

9. The OpenVPN Choose Install Location dialog box appears. Click the [Install] button.

10. If a Windows Security dialog box appears, select the "Always trust software from OpenVPN Inc." checkbox. Click the [Install] button.

11. The OpenVPN Installation Complete dialog box appears. Click the [Next] button.

12. The OpenVPN Completion dialog box appears. Deselect the “Show Readme” option by clicking the corresponding checkbox, and then click the [Finish] button.

13. The installation will start the OpenVPNService which will establish a connection to the Resolute VPN Server.  Once the installation is completed, open up “File Explorer” and navigate to the directory “C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\log”.

14. Open the file config.log to check the status. A successful connection will show a line at the end of the log file stating "Successful ARP Flush on interface".
